Who is Josh

The short version

I'm a data communications designer and the person behind Big Excel Energy and the free weekly Excel + Design newsletter, where every issue includes a beautifully designed, ready-to-use Excel template.

I've been named a Microsoft Excel MVP 3 times, I reach 485,000+ followers on TikTok as @bigexcelenergy, the newsletter is at 19,000+ subscribers, and my Excel templates have been downloaded nearly one million times (figures as of August 2026).

Before all this I cofounded Market.space, a competitive-intelligence platform I started in 2014 that was acquired in 2016. I came out of that pretty burnt out, spent a while abroad trying to figure out what was next, and realized the part of the work I'd actually loved was building dashboards.

These days I help brands and startups make their data matter through communication, psychology, and design - dashboards, report systems, and Excel templates for brands like Microsoft, Kellogg's, Philips, and Novo Nordisk, among others. And I was one of the earliest creators to build a big audience specifically around Excel as a visual design medium, mostly by making spreadsheets look good on camera.

What I'm known for

Excel, treated as design

My whole approach boils down to one idea: ugly dashboards don't get used. A report that's hard to read is a report nobody acts on. So I take the craft you'd expect from a product designer - layout, typography, visual hierarchy, chart design, interface patterns - and point it at the spreadsheet your team already lives in.

People describe the result as "making Excel look less like... Excel." It's the throughline across everything I publish: the templates, the newsletter, the dashboard reviews, the consulting.

Work with Josh

Hire the Excel design person

I work with brands and analytics teams who want their Excel dashboards and reports to look designed - anywhere from quick async dashboard reviews to template customization to full consulting. If you mainly need formulas fixed, I'm the wrong person.

The newsletter

The best place to start

If you want to see what I actually make, the newsletter is the best place to start. I've sent out something like 35+ free templates and tutorials over the years, and every issue still includes a designed Excel file you can open and pull apart. It's free, and if it's not for you, unsubscribing takes one click.
